I rescued a human today.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel, I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card, I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past.  I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

The mom of these puppies has been well fed by us, to regain her strength and then spayed before she returned to her neighborhood, where good people give her some food every day. And right the moment their mother was returned back, sweet Lyra took over and became the babies' foster mom.  She takes care of them, plays with them and sees to it that they get good puppy-manners :-)

Lyra and "her" puppies.

In the same wing of the shelter lives Grandpa George, who shows extreme patience towards the littles devils.  He also sees to their proper education.  All these things that matter in a pack, i.e. hierarchy, respect towards the older members and the feeling of being protected.  To be a member of a well functioning pack is essential for the development of the puppies' character.

This is Manousos, an 8 month old male that was found paralyzed from the waist down. He was dragging himself along the street, crying and asking for help. Our orthopedic surgeon after reviewing the x-rays diagnosed compound fractures on his back leg and pelvis. He had surgery (you can clearly see his shaved leg and the scar from the operation) and now he is recuperating in a confined space to avoid further injuries. His fractures were pretty serious, so he still has some time to go before he can get back to partying. It would be a terrible shame if Manousos was forced to return to the streets, hence we are looking for a responsible family to adopt him.  We can promise you that when Manousos gets better you will not be able to tell he has had such an ordeal. He is one of a kind, patient, loves cuddles and grateful. Possible date of birth June 2009. For more info please call +30 6977 846783 or info@kazshelter.org

Manoussos was taken to our orthopedic vet for the removal of the nails in his leg.  He stayed only one day there, just to recover for the anesthtic of the quick surgery and he returned to the shelter.  He is as good as new, he uses his leg and pelvis without any problem, he jumps and plays with the puppies and waits for his forever home.

Manoussos is affectionate to the extreme and loves everyone he meets, humans and dogs.

Manoussos, portrait.  It is a shame such a great dog to stay at the shelter.  He is still very young to spend his life here, he is only 8 months old.  We are absolutely certain that Manoussos would become an excellent companion of a family.

And this is our new beauty, Jet.  She is totally black, Black Jet, so that's where she got her name from.  She is less than a year old, beautiful, petite and a little overweight.  She has an amazingly shiny fur and she wags her tail like mad when someone comes near.  She is the picture of good health and she will be given spayed andvaccinated. Possible date of birth May 2009.

Jet has a special story.  After her spaying no one came forward to adopt her, so with a heavy heart we were forced to return her where we had found her: on the street, an all too common occurence for dogs we admit in the shelter for neutering.  However, after 2 days had passed, she astonished us by waiting outside the shelter.  We decided to take her in and hope she would find her new home soon.  On Sunday Jet was finally adopted by a family that appreciated her lovely charakter and her friendly nature, especially towards the family's daughter.  She went to her new home, met the family's other dog, ate the food they provided and then settled in the garden, while the family went inside to have lunch.

In half an hour Jet had found her way back to the shelter! Thankfully her new home was only a few km away from the shelter.  Jet, the incredible loyal dog!  Nevertheless, we have not lost hope and we still try to find a home for sweet Jet.  For more info please call +30 6977 846783 or info@kazshelter.org

This puppy’s story is quite different. He was abandoned outside our vets office and he brought him to us.

Kimon is roughly 2 months old, possible date of birth beginning of December 2009. He is a very lively puppy, he seems to have springs under his paws. He is truly amazing, perfect for a family with children. Fearless, playful and loves cuddles. Info +30 6977846783 and info@kazshelter.org

Do you remember Mistoklis, the puppy with the nasty leg fracture that could not undergo surgery?  The little boy has grown into a fine young man of 7 months with wonderful lush silky fur.  His leg has totally healed and is running and jumping with Avra like a foal.  And when Avra finds a playmate she doesn't stop until she knocks him out.

Mistoklis would like a family that would be able to see him for the treasure he really is and not like another black dog. For more info +30 6977846783 and info@kazshelter.org

He is very sweet and beautiful and knows how to appear big and clever when he hears a strange sound.

After Pantelis, another Shar Pei was found wandering the streets.  This is Shar, around 6 years old, very sweet natured, loving, with one great love: going out for walks.  He had been attacked and biten by dogs and the bite marks are obvious in the picture.  Shar is healthy and has tested negative for Erlichiosis and Leishmania.  He just needs someone to love him and open his/her heart and home to him. For more information: +30 210 8013302, +30 6944 260 909 and renakane1996@hotmail.com

This is a recent picture of Shar.  You can clearly see how healthy he is looking and how well his wounds have healed.  He is still crazy for his walks but unfortunately he is still kept at a vet's practice, in a crate. 2.2.10

This beauty is Big Fat Mama!  She is a mix shepherd, found on the island of Rhodes, abandoned and pregnant in a field, soaking wet from rain.  When we approached her she was so happy, she was lying on the ground crying for us to give her affection.  She is over 2 years old and her ears have been cut by her previous owners.  She has been spayed since we found her and we hope to find for her a small corner in someone's garden, a plate of food and a kind touch from her new family.  For more information: info@strayshelp.gr

Once again, a hunter was the catalyt in this dog's life.  The hunter said that the dog is no good and has no use anymore of him.  "Either you take him or I just leave him on the street or I even shoot him" were the hunter's words.  And when we asked what is the dog's name he shrugged his shoulders dissmissively and didn't answer.

The poor dog is very gentle and cuddly, seeking human affection, patiently waiting for his turn for a kind touch and a treat.  Maybe he feels that our shelter is a better place to live than his previous home.  It shows from his surprise whenever we reach out to pet him.  At first he bows his head closing his eyes, evidently waiting for the hit that is to follow and then he looks at us with wide open eyes, full of surprise and licks our hands.

Because he is so loving we named him Agapios.  Epagneul Bretons are notorious for their sweet and loving nature.  They make an ideal family pet and have a special affection to children.  Agapios is waiting for adoption applications, unless you are a hunter.  No hunter will take our Agapios.

He is apx 3 years old, neutered and vaccinated.

Scirocco is our goofy mix Pitbul.  He is only 6 months old, has short legs, floppy ears and llllloves kisses, cuddles, kids and other dogs.  He is smart, he is gentle, he is affectionate, he is funny, in other words he is all a Pitbul or one of their crosses should be.  Alas, luck was not at his side.  His colour and the myth which wants Pitbuls being fierce animals has kept him his entire young life in  the shelter.  What a shame!

Here, we present to you our darlings who cannot return to the street either because of their old age or because of their fear for humans.  By virtually adopting one of them you give them the chance to stay in the shelter and be provided for.  Food, medical care, surgeries, deworming, vaccinations are some of the costs we have to face each month.  Please help us to help them.

Pamba, 5 years of age, is healthy, vaccinated and spayed.  She was found about three years ago locked in the basement after her owner's death. She has become the baby-sitter of the shelter as she watches out when the puppies come out to play. Pamba is still afraid of people but would willingly give her life for the people she knows and loves.  We cannot even think of her wandering around on the roads in panic, she would probably die before a car would hit her. Give her a chance to stay with us at the shelter by virtually adopting her.

Pamba shares with you the recipe for her favorite treat. You fill a rubber gong with yogurt and you place it in the freezer.  When it is frozen you can give it to your beloved companion, he will be kept busy while at the same time he will enjoy his "ice cream".

Mitsos is our mix Dogo Argentino.  He was a very poor creature when he first came to the shelter, we didn't know if he would make it.  Mitsos is now a healthy old boy, who would llllllove to be virtually adopted and to have visits for his sake on Saturdays.  Cookies and girls (photo) are his great weacknesses :-))

Tel 6977 846783  and info@kazshelter.org

Jula is our very timid girl.  She loves being petted and belly scratched, but only by those she knows well.  5 years old, spayed and vaccinated. She has no hope of being adopted. Who would take the time and the risk to train a dog who is afraid of her own shadow.

When we found her in 2006, she was unconscious, in a coma, for about two days as per the people’s information in the area.  For about a week we did not know if she would live or not, regardless the medication we kept giving her and the efforts to make her better. Her body was full of wounds and flies were like a cloud around her. She finally opened her eyes and stand on her legs slowly but it was like she was not “there”.  She would stand in the corner for hours, without responding to anything. We had not indication if she could see or hear.  We would feed her some meat juice and sometimes place some pieces of meat in her mouth but it seemed as if she did not know how to eat it.  Slowly she started understanding when someone would walk into her pen and she would respond by making circles round herself. We were in despair as we thought that Pia's life was with no quality or dignity.  Until we decided to place her in the big yard,  with some of our well mannered dogs. Pia in a few days was transformed. She always had a look lost in space, but giving her time she managed to focus and now we are convinced that she can see as well as hear and she is enjoying her life.  The circles she used to do around her self have become less and less and she does not miss an opportunity to run and jump around with her friends.  She is almost a normal dog, that eats, barks, plays like any other.  But she will stay at the shelter for the rest of her life. No one can take on the responsibility of a dog with brain damage from which she can not manage to recover completely .  And of course, there is no way that Pia will be placed back on the streets. We are asking for your help so we can offer Pia the life she deserves as she is only two years old. Tel 6977 846783 and info@kazshelter.org

Here we present grandpa Giorgos who needs your support. He is old and when he arrived in the shelter he had great health problems, full of wounds and very weak. We managed to cure him, we pampered him, fed him and now he can leave the shelter and move into a dog's house in your yard. All he needs is some snugness and a plate of food for as long as he is still around. In the photo you can see how he was when he first arrived. Now he is unrecognizable, a bit fat with a rich coat, a gorgeous old sheppard’s dog. He also asked me to tell you that he would even be interested in an virtual adoption, to cover his expenses while he remains at the shelter.

Grandpa Giorgos and his harem!! Above with Maria and below with Polyanna and Maria. He also has another girlfriend – Hionati. All the females have been neutered so they can enjoy each other's company. Only males do not fit in Giorgos' world:-))

Lefkippos, a white Spitz, was found wandering around Tatoiou street.  He has no microchip, and at the moment he is being taken cared of here at the shelter. He is also being treated by our vet for an infection he has in his anal-gland. Until now no one has claimed loss of this dog at the police stations of the area.  He is an old boy and no one wants to adopt him. He would love though a virtual adoption to help him stay at the shelter. Tel 6977 846783 and info@kazshelter.org

Mama Linda when first found with her pups.  She weighed only the weight of her bones and skin.  She suffered from Leishmaniosis and eternal hunger.

And this is how she looks today.  She is a plump and sweet girl and extremely affectionate.  5 years old, spayed, vaccinated and regularly dewormed. Her disease is a bad memory of the past and we monitor her regurarly with blood tests.

Sweet Viola!  A little girl who is begging for a treat or for a foster mom/dad.  Tel 6977 846783  and info@kazshelter.org

Kostas (left) with one blue eye met Giannis (right) in one of his walks and they instantly became friends creating the "Ocean 2" gang. They are both 2-3 years old and they would be a smashing duo guarding some fenced in yard or a house.  Both are vaccinated, dewormed and neutered. Affectionate and totally friendly to their humans, the boys have great guarding skills, but absolutely no diplomatic talent towards other dogs.  Tel 6977 846783 and info@kazshelter.org.

Myrina, a very sad story.  She was found in a filed on the verge of death.  She could not walk, not even stand up.  She came to the shelter, had all necessary tests.  Among othe health issues she was suffering from starvation... We put her on drips, hand fed her and on the third day she managed to stand on her feet. Even if she gains weight and surpasses her medical conditions, Myrina seems unable to survive alone on the streets. She is another one of our dogs that needs a sponsor.  For more information: Tel 6977 846783 and info@kazshelter.org.

Our Gerakos is a lucky little fellow.  He was taken by his family to a vet's to be euthanized.  He was too old and they didn't want him any more.  We found out about the case and we took Gerakos to the shelter.  We even managed to find a family for him, but they left the door open and Gerakos disappeared.  An old boy, in a hostile area, many km away from the shelter.  After 2 weeks we found him and he came back to the shelter.  Now, he enjoys life living in the shelter's office and in the front yard greeting all our visitors and flirting with all fourlegged girls.

The handbag took over his place on the armchair, but Gerakos didn't hesitate.  He just sqeezed next to it.

Spring obviously suits him. On one of his walks in the front yard of the shelter.  25.3.2010

This is our Aisha and her sad story.  When she was 2 months old we fished out of a well where she had been dumped or she had managed to crawl on the ledge, push the well's lead and lose her balance (lets get not crazy).  From then on, human presence is very disturbing to Aisha.  Even we cannot get near her although we have her since she was a small puppy and we have never even yelled at her. Aisha is now 4 years old and totaly incapable of taking care of herself on the streets.  Who would adopt a black, crazily fearful animal?

Marika has been living at the shelter since it opened.  She is a healthy, beautiful, medium size German Shepherd mix, 5-6 years of age, who would be afraid to death if she were to be found in unknown surroundings.  She is a timid dog but she accepts the people she knows.  Perhaps the right person eith right amount of patience and love could bring Marika out of her shell, to live with a family and give lots of love.  However, no one has come forward to take on such a responsibility.

Tony has been at the shelter for about 2 years.  Last year he had surgery to remove bullet fragments from his knee.  A seconde surgery followed the first, to allow him to use and staighten his leg, but without success.  Tony is very timid and though he enjoys seen us and receiving his cookies, he does not let us pet him. He might not get along with humans all that well, but he has got plenty of four legged friends to keep him company.

Corina!  A real beauty!  She lives in the shelter since she was a small puppy but she has not been adopted.  She is very timid and no one has come so far forward to take the responsibility and give her a chance.   She would love though a sponsor who would make it possible for her to stay at the shelter indefinitely.
